Senior Independence: Empowering Seniors with Dignity and Choice

In 2013, Senior Connections, The Capital Area Agency on Aging will celebrate 40 years of helping seniors maintain Independence in their homes and communities. This month, as we celebrate the Independence of our nation, it is an opportune time to reflect on the importance of the services that our Agency has provided since 1973 to empower seniors with dignity and choice. These services are possible with funding
provided under the Older Americans Act and other sources through the Virginia Department for the Aging (VDA). On July 1, VDA joined with
the Virginia Department of Rehabilitative Services (DRS) to have a broader focus on the needs of older adults and to assist younger
individuals with disabilities. We applaud the new Department for Aging and Rehabilitative Services (DARS) under the leadership of
Commissioner Jim Rothrock and staff.

As Senior Connections and other Area Agencies on Aging fully embrace our roles as Aging and Disability Resource Connections or Centers
(ADRCs), we will continue to work with community partners to promote Senior Independence. We will respond to the needs of seniors with
the goal of helping them to live independently in their homes and communities. We are proud to support their Independence by helping caregivers and providing a range of home and community services. We also support their Independence by recognizing the interdependence
that exists between the generations as well as recognizing older adults as valuable resources to our communities as volunteers and caregivers.

Senior Independence is supported by the many services offered by Senior Connections. For the next few years, our service priorities include:
* Mobility Management and Coordinated Transportation
* Meals, Nutritional Support, Health/Wellness and Chronic Disease Self Management
* Information and Assistance
* No Wrong Door/Aging and Disability Resource to Facilitate Easy Assess to Services
* Options Counseling to Facilitate Service Choices
* Caregiver Respite and Home Care
* Volunteer and Employment Assistance
* Expansion of Public Guardian Program with Focus on Education and Outreach

As we celebrate Independence, let's keep Senior Services at the top of our list. It is through our services that we promote and help maintain Senior Independence and our successful partnerships help sustain interdependence. Thanks for your support and interest.
