Older Americans Month: "Unleash the Power Of Age"

When the first Older Americans Month celebration was held in 1963, there were 17 million Americans still living who had celebrated their 65th birthdays.  In 2013, due to advances in health care, life style changes, availability of services and changing attitudes, there are more than 45 million people over the age of 65 and this number will almost double by the year 2030.  This year's theme for Older Americans Month is "Unleash the Power of Age."  This theme highlights the important contributions and leadership roles that older adults play in their families and communities.  This theme also points to the numerous achievements of older citizens and the power they have in influencing current and future generations.  Further, they "unleash their power" as they age when they share their knowledge, volunteer, engage in civic affairs and participate in wide ranging activities.

Many events and recognitions are being held to celebrate this year's Older Americans Month.  The City of Richmond and the Counties of Charles City, Chesterfield, Goochland, Hanover, Henrico, New Kent and Powhatan have enacted Proclamations that recognize the power of their older citizens and contributions they make every day.  These Proclamations also recognize older citizens as valuable resources.  The Agency's Open House and 40th Anniversary event, on Tuesday, May 21 from 2:30 to 4:30 p.m., highlights our programs, recognize Community Partners, spotlights the "power of age" and celebrates accomplishments during the past 40 years, 1973 to 2013.  Thank you for joining us for our Open House and finding other ways to celebrate Older Americans Month this.  Throughout the year, please continue to celebrate and recognize older adults and caregivers.  Thank you for your interest and support as we celebrate this year.
