May 2011: Community Connections
By commrels @ 8:30 AM :: 5293 Views

Since 1963, our Country has observed Older Americans Month as a time to recognize the accomplishments of older adults. The theme for May 2011 is “Older Americans: Connecting the Community.” I particularly like this theme because it reflects on the many ties that we find in our communities between citizens, government, service groups and advocates. These ties help us to realize the important role that older adults serve as role models for all of us. Thanks for joining us as we honor older adults, family members, volunteers and the professionals who support them. We extend thanks to all of our local governments for proclaiming May 2011 to be Older Americans Month. They have provided copies of their proclamations to us and there is a similar proclamation issued by the Governor through the Virginia Department for the Aging. This year, we have set aside time on Tuesday, May 24 from in conjunction with the Annual Meeting of our Board of Directors and Advisory Council for an Agency Open House at Senior Connections. We invite you to join us between the hours of 1 to 4 p.m. to meet our Board, Advisory Council, volunteers and staff with the opportunity to learn about our programs, services and special projects. In closing, I want to salute our Volunteer Money Management Program, which has been selected by the Virginia Commonwealth Council on Aging as a best practice initiative. This powerful program with dedicated volunteers and staff enable older adults to remain in their homes by helping to keep their finances in order. As we celebrate Older Virginians Month, we honor all of our program participants, volunteers and certainly our staff at Senior Connections. Thank you for joining us in celebrating during May and in the future. Thank you for helping us to maintain our “community connections.”
