Focus 50 Plus: Breast Cancer Screening and Education Project

National Breast Cancer Awareness Month has been observed since 1985.  Each year, in October, time has been set aside for special events to promote awareness, education and empowerment. As we enjoy the remainder of the Fall season and look forward to the Holidays in November, December and January, this is a good time to turn our attention to the work that is being done by the Central Virginia Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure.  We are reminded that breast cancer is the most prevalent cancer in the world.  More people are being diagnosed every day and thankfully, more survivors are celebrating each year.  Thanks to the efforts of Komen, more funding is being raised to address breast cancer.  More volunteers and donors are being engaged to support research, education and outreach.  Many local projects are funded by Komen and are a work in our local communities.  These programs support education for women who may be medically underserved.  Through local projects, they learn about the importance of self examinations, professional screening resources and mammograms.  Senior Connections' Focus 50 Plus is an example of this type of project that is generously funded by Komen.  For the past two years, Focus 50 Plus, a Screening and Education Initiative, has been in action.  Trained volunteers, staff and partner groups are providing information and education to motivate women age 50 and over to learn about local resources available to them.  Focus 50 Plus is conducting special outreach to African American and Hispanic women.  Community volunteers assist with this special outreach and education initiative.  More than 3,000 women have received information and resources through Focus 50 Plus.  To sign up to volunteer, get information about resources or express your support, please contact Dr. Catherine Hendrickson, Project Director at 804-343-3043 or chendrickson@youraaa.org.  Thank you for your interest and support.
