The Medicare Prescription Drug Benefit (Part D)
Effective January 1, 2006, Medicare Part D establishes an optional prescription drug benefit for individuals who are entitled to or enrolled in Medicare benefits under Medicare Part A and Part B.

Coverage for the new prescription drug benefit will be provided through private prescription drug plans (PDPs) that offer drug-only coverage, or through Medicare Advantage (MA) plans that offer integrated prescription drug and health care coverage. Details on the specific plans offered to you will be forthcoming in the next several months from CMS (The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services).

The Virginia Department of Medical Assistance Services (DMAS) has developed a fact sheet about Medicare Part D benefits. This sheet will answer basic questions about benefits, coverage, cost-sharing and the low-income subsidy.

Some basic points to remember:

Medicare Prescription Drug Coverage (added)

  • Drug coverage that helps you pay for the prescriptions you need.
  • Medicare prescription drug coverage is available to all people with Medicare.
  • There is additional help for those who need it most.
The Medicare prescription drug coverage pays for brand name and generic drugs.
  • You can choose between at least two Medicare prescription drug plans and pick a plan that is right for you.

For additional information on all aspects of Medicare in 2005, the booklet "Medicare and You: 2005" can be downloaded. Information specific to Medicare Prescription Drug Plans is located on pages 13-15 of this booklet.
